THE CONCERT

It may seem a paradox, but one of the pianists most indissolubly linked to the keyboard makes a great appearance as an orchestral conductor. In his recital of 23 April 2018 in the Sala Piatti, Bergamo, the pianist Kostantin Bogino to all effects gave an exceptional display as the conductor or an orchestra, or rather, a chamber orchestra.
Bogino is a true guru of pianistic teaching. He moves his powerful fingers as the creator of a tapestry weaves the threads of his precious fabric. While at the same time, this Russian artist fashions musical intrigues and counterpoints from lines and timbres.
His fingers are an authentic means with which to delve into music, mystery and the abysses of the human soul, whether in the rock-style roar and rebellion of the young Bartók (Sonata, 1926) or in Beethoven’s Sonata op.110, a detached contemplation of life, its gaze no longer on earthly things.
His recital may be likened to a diary of the soul, a quest beyond the threshold of the mysteries of art. With one difference: it is a live declamation, typical of the actor who relates his life as an artist. Bogino’s fingers depict polyphonically. He has the skills of a painter, the strength of a sculptor who has dedicated a lifetime to handling the tools and secrets of his material. Poetic profundity and abundance, moral imperative and philosophical logos are united in a rare, pregnant syncretism of sound.
Bogino has that rare, powerful and inimitable dominance typical of certain souls from the East, animated by the fire of one who has never ceased to experience human and spiritual, as well as artistic passions.
Thus it is, too, in Debussy’s eccentric portraits (a Children’s Corner without frills) or in Rachmaninov’s titanic emotionalism.
